The Institute for AIDS Research
The Institute for AIDS Research (IAR) conducts research on HIV/AIDS, other blood-borne and sexually transmitted infections in order to increase knowledge that may be helpful in mitigating the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The areas of research include: epidemiology, risk factors, and risk reduction interventions. Examination of psychological, social, community, cultural, economic, historic and policy-level factors that may influence the epidemic have also been undertaken. IAR staff, with a broad multi-disciplinary range of methodological expertise, have made major contributions to the understanding of the HIV epidemic in New York City and HIV epidemics throughout the world.
By establishing research sites in neighborhoods most affected by HIV, IAR investigators have the opportunity to conduct qualitative and quantitative research on a wide variety of HIV-related conditions. New research directions include studies with new immigrants, hepatitis C, interventions with seropositive substance users and studies with high-risk individuals in countries outside the U.S.
