NDRI Welcomes Dr. Paula Mayock
via NIDA’s INVEST Research Fellowship
NDRI welcomes Dr. Paula Mayock who will be supported by a 12 month INVEST Drug Abuse Research Fellowship. The INVEST Fellowship combines postdoctoral research training for non-US citizens in the United States with professional development activities and grant-writing guidance to form a unique mentored program for drug abuse scientists. Dr. Paula Mayock (Children's Research Centre, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland) will be mentored by Michael C. Clatts.
Though not often associated with heroin injection, 42% of the documented HIV infections in Ireland are attributable to intravenous drug injection (principally heroin) and as many as 70% of Irish IDU's have HCV. In addition to training in the use of ethno-epidemiology approaches in research among out-of-treatment populations, the project will include mentored study of heroin initiation among high risk youth in Dublin, including the physical and social environments in which youth initiate heroin use, variability in the injection practices they employ, their decision-making around modes of heroin administration, and perceived barriers to risk reduction and help seeking.
