A Special Issue of the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment
Guest-Edited by Stanley Sacks

Stanley Sacks, PhD, Director of the Center for the Integration of Research and Practice at NDRI, has edited the January 2008 Special Issue of the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, Vo. 34, No. 1: “Recent Advances in Research on the Treatment of Co-occurring Disorders” with the assistance of Co-Guest Editors Redonna Chandler and Junius Gonzalez. Recent research findings have been consolidated in this special issue, which presents the current scientific understanding about co-occurring disorders, drawn from the mental health and substance abuse systems. An agenda for future research is suggested that guides next endeavors along three main avenues, one of which relates to the continued development of treatment for co-occurring disorders while considering resource limitations. Another theme for future study relates to aftercare, where programming needs to reinforce and sustain recovery for this particularly vulnerable population. The third item asks for contributions to the existing knowledge regarding the processes by which innovative practices are adopted and sustained. “Co-occurring disorders is a relatively new area of research; this special issue illustrates the productivity of the work to date, and indicates the potential for advances to come.”
