Dr. Alexandre Laudet Presents: Building the Science of Recovery

Dr. Alexandre Laudet, Director of the Center for the Study of Addictions and Recovery and Deputy Director of the Institute for Treatment and Services Research presented ‘Building the Science of Recovery’ at a national conference “Aligning Concepts, Practice and Contexts to Promote Long-Term Recovery: An Action Plan” hosted in May by the Institute for Research, Education, and Training in Addictions (IRETA) in Philadelphia. In her presentation and in a pre-conference brief, Laudet argued that the vast body of knowledge on addiction needs to be complemented with the science of recovery that will elucidate the components, patterns, paths and predictors of long-term recovery from substance use disorders. This is especially true as SAMHSA is increasingly making recovery a priority and single state agencies are likewise transitioning their substance abuse services systems to a recovery-focused orientation.

Following Dr Laudet’s presentation, commentaries were provided by Dr. Timothy Condon, Deputy Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Dr. Mark Willenbring, Director of the Division of Treatment & Recovery Research at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and Dr. Thomas McLellan, founder and CEO of the Treatment Research Institute (TRI) in Philadelphia. Other speakers at the day-long symposium included Dr. Westley Clark, Director of SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) and William White, a leading recovery historian and advocate. All the presentations are available for download at http://www.ireta.org/ireta_main/recovery-symposium.html.
