Harlem River Couples Project Opens Office in South Bronx
The Harlem River Couples Project, an NDRI project conducted
by Dr. Jim McMahon, is in the process of staffing its new offices
on Willis Avenue overlooking the 149th Street subway hub in the South
Bronx. This four-year prospective study was funded by the National Institutes
of Health to develop and evaluate health education programs (including
HIV counseling and testing) for heterosexual couples in Harlem, East
Harlem and South Bronx neighborhoods. The Harlem River Couples Project
is the fruition of eight years of NDRI research involving two previous
studies on women's and couple's health and epidemiology conducted
by Dr. Stephanie Tortu (formerly of NDRI, now at Tulane University)
and Dr. McMahon. Project staff will begin recruiting study participants
by early February, 2005. Ms. Leilani Torres, Program Director, will
supervise operations at the new field site.
This research is supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, grant no. R01 DA15641.
