Position Title: Community Intervention Worker (2 positions available) (This position is funded through June 30, 2008. Employment past that date is contingent upon OASAS funding.)

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Works under the supervision of the AOP Field Manager and the Regional Field Director/Deputy Program Director.
- Provide street-based outreach services through the distributions of materials, information, education and prevention literature to target population(s).
- Collect ethnographic observational field data, narrative and statistical data, and produce reports (e.g. case histories, etc.) in support of evaluation, assessment and program activities.
- Maintain daily diaries, logs or field notes, which can be distilled by program management into reports on program activities.
- Access IDUs in the settings (e.g. shooting galleries, etc.) and at the times (e.g. late afternoons, etc.) in which users are more easily accessed.
- Field and office work to encompass assigned locations within our borough locations as activities dictate.
- Provide the local community with resource and referral services to target population(s) on the streets, in and around identified high-risk areas.
- Assist management in the identification of high-risk populations, the places where injectors congregate and can be accessed, and in developing key contacts for mass distribution of our materials.
- Assemble and prepare distribution materials to insure sufficient daily inventory to conduct outreach efforts to individuals and mass distribution locations.
- Must have a valid NYS Driver License (in good standing with no major violations or points)
- Other related duties as requested
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Minimum High School Diploma or GED plus one year of related experience; Preferred: Some College
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
- Must have accurate and up-to-date knowledge of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, HBV/HCV and substance misuse issues
- Must be comfortable interacting with active drug users and their sexual partners
- Must be able to process and convey information accurately without personal bias
- Must be able to effectively listen to participants, assess their needs and take appropriate actions (e.g. referrals to services, client advocacy, etc.)
- Must be able to work under the conditions (e.g. cold weather, rain, etc.) and in settings where drug users congregate and use drugs (e.g. shooting galleries, outdoor lots, SROs, etc.)
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be willing to accept assignments as borough operations dictate
- The workday is 7-1/2 hours with a one hour unpaid lunch (8-1/2 hours total). Work hours may vary from 6:30am to 9:00pm.
